SCIENCE FAIR WILL BE IN MIAMI

The Gila County Regional Science Fair will be held Thursday, February 26, 2014 at Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum in Miami, Ariz. The Town of Miami recently remodeled the Bullion gymnasium, which will serve as the showcase room for this year’s science fair projects. While projects are being judged, students, coordinators, teachers, and guests will have the opportunity to view the museum’s historical and mineral exhibits.

Science fair projects will be judged based on age division and subject category: Elementary (grades 5-6), Junior (grades 7-8) and Senior (grades 9-12). Project categories are: Animal Sciences, Behavioral & Social Sciences, Cellular & Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Medicine & Health Sciences, Physics & Astronomy, and Plant Sciences. The Senior Division also features the following categories: Biochemistry, Environmental Management, Engineering: Materials & Bioengineering, and the Microbiology.First place winners in each division and category from participating schools/districts are eligible to compete in the regional fair. Winners at the regional fair are eligible to compete at Arizona State Science and Engineering Fair March 31-April 2 at the Phoenix Convention Center.

In an effort to assist science fair coordinators, the staff of the Gila County Schools Office will be hosting two informative presentations for coordinators, one in northern Gila County and one in southern Gila County. Staff will discuss the AzSEF’s registration process and answer any questions to ensure timely and complete registration of projects. Each school will also be provided with informative materials, including a coordinator handbook, student handbook, checklists, and sample forms

Another First Friday program is planned tomorrow night, January 3rd at the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum in the Town of Miami. Guest Speaker is Bill Haak, who is a retired Gila County Museum Director. He will talk about Apache Chief Talkalai who at one time had lived at an encampment on the west side of the town of Miami during our early history.  The program starts 6:30pm this Friday night. It is free and open to the public.

ASARCO Management and Representatives of 6 unions are expected to resume labor talks next Tuesday, January 14th to try and reach a new wage package. Soome 2,400 employees of ASARCO are still on their jobs at the companys Arizona Copper mines working under the terms of the old labor contract which expired July lst of last year.

On Saturday January 11th, the  the East Valley Lamplighters Barbershop Chorus will be in town.  The men will be performing at the Miami High School Auditorium starting at 7pm.  Ticket information is available at 928-425-6466

The Annual Gem and Mineral Show will be January 16, 17 and 18th at the Gila County Fairgrounds.

Spring semester classes at the Gila Pueblo College campuses in Globe, Payson and San Carlos begin Wedednesday, January 8th. Lists of classes being offered and tuition fees are on the college’s web site.

“Suessical the Musical Jr ” is coming to the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts in downtown Globe on Saturday January 25th at 3:30pm. There is no admission, but donations are gratefully appreciated to offset the groups travel expenses.  The show is being presented by the Detour Company Theatre.

The Gila County government in Globe has announced their annual surplus on line auction will be January 21, 2014.  There are 39 cars and trucks on the auction sale list ranging from 1968 to 2005, along with a crane and 11 miscellaneous items. Gila Community College will be closed for the holidays beginning December 14th through December 30th
now. Students can register at the Gila Pueblo Campus in Globe, the Payson Campus, or the San Carlos
Campus Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm through December 13th

or beginning December 30th.

KAET bringing Eight Digital TV Channels To Globe!

KAET, Channel 8, The Phoenix PBS TV Station has announced the installation of brand new digital rural repeater transmitters (a.k.a., translators) this summer to benefit the residents of rural Arizona, including Globe-Miami and the surrounding area.  In summer 2013, as the result of grant funding,  KAET will launch a series of seven digital rural repeater transmitters, which will extend the digital signal out to areas in Gila county.

Our community will now have free over-the-air access to Eight HD (DTV 8.1) programming with beautiful high definition video.  The Channels include Eight Life (DTV 8.2), Eight World (DTV 8.3) and Eight Classical (DTV 8.4).  It also provides access to the SunSounds reading service for the visually impaired via 8.4 secondary audio.

For more information, KAET, Channel 8 will be at the Globe Active Adult Center on Tuesday, August 27 at 10:30 am to introduce this new service to the Globe-Miami area residents!  Everyone iswelcome to attend.  The address is 579 S. Broad Street, right underneath the overpass.

Healthy Living with Diabetes Workshops

Sick and tired of being sick and tired?  Have diabetes and fight a losing battle?  Take controlof your health and attend the Healthy Living with Diabetes workshops!  This is not a lecture, but an interactive workshop.  It provides the skills you need to take control of your condition and feel better while enjoying the support of others with similar problems.  The program was developed by Dr. Kate Lorig at Stanford University and people who complete the workshop report fewer hospitalizations and outpatient visits.

The information session is Tuesday, September 10 from 10-11 am.  The workshops areonce per week for six weeks, beginning on Tuesday, September 17 from 1-3:30 pm and go throughTuesday, October 22 from 1-3:30 pm.  This is FREE, but you do need to register by calling the GlobeActive Adult Center, 579 S. Broad Street, at 928.425.9030.  Seating is limited and refreshments willbe provided.  The Healthy Living with Diabetes workshops are brought to us by Arizona Living WellInstitute.  Don’t miss this great opportunity to take control of your diabetes!
